Giving Thanks 2012

This Thanksgiving, Mike and I decided that it would be best if we stayed in San Antonio. We let our parents know they were invited to join us for the holiday, but that we were unable to travel this year. Mike's mom and my mom RSVP'd for our celebration and we had a wonderful time!

Meet the Newest Holtzes!

Nope, we're not pregnant and we didn't adopt, but our family has grown! :)

Mike spent a couple weekends turning one of our old kitchen cabinets into this:
The Fowlamo
Yes, that is a chicken coop. Shaped like the Alamo. You might call it the Fowlamo.

A guy that Mike works with lives on some land and has horses and chickens. He was looking to get rid of 3 of his chickens and we just so happened to be looking for 3 tenants for our chicken coop (3 is the max you can have in the city). Mike's friend brought them over along with a generous amount of hay and chicken feed.

Here are our lovely ladies:

The red one is named Gumbo, one black on is Ana (after Santa Ana), and the other black on is named Omelet. Here's a close up:
Gumbo and Ana enjoying their enclosed area
We're raising them mainly for eggs and entertainment. So far we've been getting about 2 eggs a day. Here's what they look like:
Gumbo and Ana laid eggs right away after we got them. Omelet took a little longer to feel comfortable producing. Her eggs are speckled (2nd from the back on the right side) and they are my favorite. She is my favorite. The other two kinda push her around and I feel bad for her.

The cat enjoys watching the chickens through the window. I guess they can see her, too. One time she ran to the window to watch them and it spooked them and they ran away! Most of the time she sits and "chatters" at them like this:

A Good Man is Hard to Find!

...so I married an excellent one! ;)

In April of 2009 Mike and I were in Wichita for Easter. My dad had been wanting to tear down some lattice work above the patio that was falling apart and Mike was just the man to help him! Mike was so excited about doing some real "Man Work" that he even bought a new tool: the Fubar. After tearing it all down Mike asked if he could keep the larger pieces of lumber that were in good shape. Dad stored the pieces Mike wanted and we hauled them home that Christmas.

And they sat in our back yard for over a year.

As the weather has warmed up this Spring, I've been inspired to do some planting. We have a small garden in the backyard, but it doesn't get much sun. I asked Mike if he thought he could build a raised planter. He said "Of course!" What a perfect use for the outdoor wood!

We were coming up on a free weekend so Mike spent evenings drawing up plans. An "L" shaped planter with a bench? Fantastic! We only have enough wood for and "I" shaped planter with a bench? That's ok, too! :)

At 7am on Saturday morning, Mike and I went to Lowe's for screws. That's right, we were going to build a 2'x7' raised planter box with a bench attached and all we needed at Lowe's was a box of exterior screws! We're so resourceful! Mike went to work as soon as we got back and I went and did fun things like go to the farmer's market and get potted herbs. By lunchtime we had this:

We went to the nursery together after lunch and bought some pepper, cilantro, tomatoes and cauliflower plants. After that we went to GardenVille and got 1/2 cu. yard of potting soil (it pretty much filled the bed of the truck). We wheeled the soil into the backyard using our recycling bin (seemed appropriate). After we filled the planter and planted all our plants, the sun was going down so it was time to quit for the day.

On Sunday we met some friends at Boerne Lake for a birthday party and a cookout. Afterwards it was time to finish up the planter/bench! I took a brief (ok, 2.5 hour) nap and when I awoke the bench was finished!! My amazing husband put together a planter/bench in just one weekend! I'm so lucky!

Happy Halloween!

We must have been living in our house for a year by now because we found ourselves giving candy to droves of children again! Last year we were watching the OU/K-state game in the only two chairs in the house on a 17" television with our new bed in the dining room. We had only been in our house for 3 days. A sign in our neighborhood stated that Trick-or-Treating would happen from 5-9pm that night. A little before 5pm we finished installing our new Texas porch lights, ready for scores of Trick-or-Treaters.

By 6:30 we were giving handfuls of candy to the few children that
had stopped by. We certainly didn't want to keep it and it looked as if we'd bought too much! Then at 7:00 they came from every direction and before 8pm we ran out of candy.

With children at the door.

I felt horrible.

Looking back, I doubt they even cared that much. They don't know us from the neighbors and they know there's more candy down the street. In the end it was a fun night (that may or may not have involved wine).

This year, I was going to be more than ready. I researched online what the 'healthiest' candy was. I decided York minis (50cals and dark chocolate), 3 Musketeers minis, and mini Snickers. 5 bags total. Mike dressed up as Walker Texas Ranger and I pulled out the Angel/Devil costume I'd gotten a few years ago. The kids started coming around 6:30. A few said we had the "good candy" (yay!) and a few of the little girls said they liked my costume! They were all super cute and we were happy to help them celebrate Halloween. Just before 8 we were down to 5 pieces of candy left (but Mike had stashed a reserve for himself). Then a few big groups of kids all came at once. We had to bust into the reserve, but we didn't run out. When they left, we blew out the candles in the pumpkins and turned off our Texas lights! Success!!

Here are the pumpkins we carved last week. LSU fleur de lis, upside down Longhorn, and OU!
